Growing on the Inside while Outside
Research has proven that spending time in nature is essential for cognitive development. Nature play stimulates creativity and problem solving skills integral to executive function development. Children who play and spend time in nature have increased concentration and cognitive skills, including mitigation of ADHD/ADD symptoms. That is why Sands Montessori made it a priority to bring more nature to the campus. The Sands Montessori Parent Organization worked alongside parents, children, teachers, and community partners to plant fifty trees around the campus to bring shade, beauty, natural history, and support wildlife. They also built a natural playscape for the children to engage with nature while strengthening their mind and body. With climbing structures, loose parts, a rolling hill, and seventeen tons of sand, the possibilities for fun, learning, and growth are endless! 250 volunteer hours also built a community among the Sands Families and Mount Washington neighbors. Listen to Courtney Ryan, SMPO President, discuss the process on the Nature Guys Podcast and donate to Phase 2 of the playscape to bring trees, shade, fencing, and storage.
